GM, Indiana University, Cello Performance
I am a 32 year old musician. I grew up playing the cello, starting at age 5. I picked up other instruments as I grew older and eventually went to a conservatory. I have performed in a wide variety of contexts throughout my life including professional symphonies and popular music ensembles. I have taught private lessons for 10 years in schools, my studio and in students homes. I have taught all ages and am comfortable with young children. I have become proficient in a variety of styles including rock, electronic, jazz and classical. I can teach theory and composition.
I have been teaching for the last 10 years. I taught at the East Bay Waldorf School in Berkeley, CA immediately after graduating college where I taught 5-13 year olds. I have taught private lessons to all ages. I can teach lead and rhythm guitar in a variety of styles including pop, jazz, rock. I can teach improvisation and theory. I have a good educational background in theory as it was an important part of my degree so am able to go over both written and ear training in good detail. I have composed a great deal of my own music and can also teach that.
For young children I usually use the Suzuki method books for song selection and through those we can focus on the basic fundamentals of positioning and technical development. It is easy to see what needs to be addressed through those first few songs and we can go from there. For older children and adults we can select from a wider variety with input from the student and we can work on whatever technical issues arise based on the level of the student. If the student is advanced we can work on whatever they have chosen and address whatever questions the student has as well as any technical or musical suggestions I might have.
I am an experienced student, teacher and performer so I do my best to observe the student and suggest whatever technical knowledge I have regarding positioning and methods to approach certain musical passages. I love to improvise and always enjoy sharing my understanding of that process.
