I'm a self-taught drummer whose influences are very broad, from '80s Hair Metal to '90s Grunge to punk and country, classic rock, hip-hop, heavy metal, blues, funk, even bluegrass. The only styles I don't play or teach (that are popular) are screamo, death metal (no blast beats here), and jazz. I'm good with just about anything else and can always teach the basics from beginner to advanced.
I began playing drums in 1994. In 1999, I joined my first band, which was blues/funk/rock. We had a ton of fun, recorded two albums in the studio, won a bunch of contests, played Hollywood and countless local gigs. Since then, I have recorded two more albums with various bands and have massive amounts of stage time as part of a live group. During that time, I have taught a few random people how to play or how to improve. Although I was never paid as they were informal lessons, I still prided myself on giving good, concrete advice and am happy to say that all those people continue to play the drums.
I typcially join the student at whatever level he or she plays and pick it up from there, looking closely for bad and good habits. Once I surmise the level and goals of the player, I'll work on improvement using solid techniques.
I'm not a knuckle-rapping authoritarian. I find that casual and fun lessons amount to greater and faster improvement. I encourage instead of discourage and I love to watch the improvements come. I can't promise big venue tours but I can promise happy improvement.
