I started playing guitar about a month before my twelfth birthday. From the beginning I was highly determined to learn guitar technique and music theory. I enjoy listening to, playing and teaching a wide variety of musical styles. Everything from jazz to rock, to blues, to hip hop, classical, Latin styles and so much more. I'd say at the heart of it all I'm primarily and jazz musician. I love teaching and opening up students to new musical ideas that they may have not yet known. I aim to give my student a fun learning experience.
I have been teaching people music since I was in college. I have experience teaching little kids as well as older adults. I like to give my students a combination of music fundamentals that I think will help them, as well as putting some focus on music that interests them. The key is to make sure the student is enjoying themselves. I have also put lesson videos on YouTube that include various advanced topics about things that I am passionate about, and I have received pleasant feedback on the content.
My approach to teaching really varies depending on the students specific needs. For absolute beginners, I can tend to follow a more concrete progression, but depending on who the student is, and what they're level of passion may be for learning something specific, the lesson may be highly specific. If the student is interested, I personally like to give them an understanding of some of the theory as they go along, even if they are a beginner because I believe it helps them to see the bigger picture. For students of all levels I highly encourage them to let me know what music they like and want to learn because I often times feel the best way to learn is though applications to specific examples, especially music that they enjoy.
I'm pretty laidback and like to make the student feel comfortable. If given the opportunity I can definitely launch into some pretty passionate talks about music , to really reach out and teach my students some really cool things. At the same time though, i don't like to bore any student with certain topics if they aren't ready and willing to learn these things. It really depends on the student. I like to encourage playing or jamming in the lessons as well so that we can apply different things we are learning to actual music.
