I am an elementary music instructor who specializes in brass instruments. I want to teach motivated students who have a passion of wanting to get better on their instrument. I am extremely excited to work with the students and love to see the progress that is made from my teachings and the student's hard work. In 2013, I graduated from Grambling State University and I am currently working on my master's degree at the University of Florida. I have had many performance opportunities around the U. S. and I want to give students the knowledge I have learned.
I started instructing and leading my peers at high school in 2008, then at college in 2011 as section leader in the Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band. Before graduating I did my student teaching in Grambling, La at the laboratory school. This school had students from K - 12 and I had the opportunity to work with all grades. In 2013, I started teaching professionally in Alexandria, La. This is where I learned how to start students on an instrument. I taught students in 6th -8th grade and successfully built a band program. I now teach in Houston, Tx at a school that consist of grades K-5.
My method of teaching is to start students with a strong foundation of buzzing and making characteristic sounds on the horn. This includes buzzing with and without the mouthpiece. Also, my students must be able to read music. Reading music is very important to me, having the students be musically literate with a decent tone will take a student far in their musical career. Any beginning method book will be great such as, Tradition of Excellence or one of the Essential books as long as the student gets practice reading. After this foundation happens, then we can move along to other techniques.
I love teaching students music! Most teachers that are in this profession has to love what they do because we are not in it for the money! Music is a universal language and I have never known a person to not like music or not have a favorite song. I use music to teach my students about life. It lets them know that anything you do, you have to work hard and practice. Whether it is band, sports, dance, or anything else in life students must understand that they have to practice and put in the work in order to get the result they want.
