Overview:
I'm passionate about encouraging students to be self-motivated in their pursuit of music. In 2013 I graduated from The Florida State University with my Masters in Music Composition and Theory. I have had the opportunity to write and perform original compositions for solo guitar and various ensembles utilizing the guitar, as well as various chamber ensembles and symphonies. While teaching at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, I have had the opportunity to work with a number of undergraduate and graduate students on guitar, with genres ranging from contemporary worship music to jazz, bassa nova, and solo fingerpicking styles.
EXPERIENCE
Though my specialty is in music composition, my undergraduate degree is in guitar and choral education, and I have been teaching guitar for over 10 years, to students from 5 - 80. I am currently an adjunct professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, and teach guitar and bass lessons / classes, songwriting, music composition, and music theory. If a student is interested in songwriting or composing for the guitar, then I can most definitely equip them with the tools necessary to do just that.
METHODS USED
For adult students I seek to find what the students is most interested in (classical, jazz, rock, bass nova, etc.), and then go from there in terms of finding repertoire and creating my own custom lessons plans, centered around the student's goals. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a method book geared specifically for children. Regardless of age or skill level I teach all of my students how to read music, and specifically how to read music on the guitar. I like to start with "Learning the Solo Guitar by Frederick Noad. Though this book highlights playing within the "classical guitar" style, it really is just a good, basic book to use in order to learn the notes on the guitar fretboard.
LESSON STYLE
One of the most rewarding moments for me as a teaching is that "lightbulb moment" when a student finally gets it, and I know that I helped guide them there. I set realistic goals for all of my students, but still push them to continue to achieve that which is just outside of their current ability. This enables the students to continue to progress and not become stagnant in their growth as an overall musician. I strive to teach students what interests them most, while still pushing them onward to explore and experience things that they would otherwise not on their own.
