I've had a love for music since I was a child, when my father played classical recordings at home every day. I've played piano and flute since age 10, and the enjoyment of it just keeps increasing! From elementary school through college I performed on flute, including as a soloist, in bands and orchestras; and as an adult I'm continuing that. I've performed in several orchestras in San Diego, and I'm a charter member, section leader, and soloist in the San Diego Concert Band. I enjoy coaching flute groups, including junior high and high school flutists at Band at the Beach. I have also enjoyed very much working with junior high students as a piano accompanist for choruses in the San Diego City Schools. Since 1995 I've been founder of and performer in SilverWood, a versatile music ensemble.
Out of college and newly married, I began teaching both piano and flute. When babies came along, I focused on them instead. But after they were grown, I went back into music headlong! I became involved in a lot of performing as well as a lot of teaching. I would estimate that my total teaching experience, with both flute and piano, is at least twenty years. I love sharing music with others, and I enjoy watching students develop and mature. One of my main goals is to develop a love of music in my students and to help them enjoy making music and freely express themselves through it.
After assessing a student's abilities and needs, I tailor their instruction according to what best fits their individual personalities and capabilities. I stress proper technique, beauty of tone, rhythmic accuracy, and expressive musicality. Understanding of music theory is intertwined with the musical experience. Playing in ensemble is encouraged: I play lots of duets with my students, accompany their solos on piano, and sometimes have them play with each other, such as in a flute choir.
The atmosphere presented to my students is always casual and friendly. I take care to make them feel relaxed and uninhibited. Either the parents or the students themselves frequently comment how much they appreciate my patience and flexibility. I relate to them as whole persons, not just music students. I strongly emphasize their enjoyment of the music and my expression of pleasure in their successes. I consider it a privilege to nurture others in the experience of music!
Diana is very good with kids and has a lot of patience
Diane is a wonderful, kind, patient teacher. My 13 year old enjoyed all the lessons she had with Diane. It didn't take for her to be playing songs on the piano after her classes. She absolutely loved her teacher!
Ms. Diane W. is great. She's patient and my daughter really likes her.
I love Diane. Shes a great teacher. She makes it fun to learn piano. Shes never pushy. Very patience and a joy to be around.
