Overview:
I'm a professional jazz drummer, composer and educator. I'm originally from Venezuela and currently living in New York City. I attended to The Collective School of Music and The City College of New York where I earned, with honors, a Bachelor degree in Jazz Performance. I have studied with great players such as Kim Plainfield, Peter Retzlaff, Adam Cruz, Mark Ferber, Kendrick Scott and pianist and arranger Mike Holober. I've toured and recorded with some of the most renown venezuelan jazz and pop artists such as: Pablo Gil, Alfredo Naranjo, Leo Blanco, Laurent Lecuyer, Oscar Fanega, Virginia Ramirez, Nuevas Almas Ensemble, Movida Acustica Urbana (MAU), Luca Vicenzetti, Tumbador, among many others. Also, for 4 years, I was the head of the Jazz Percussion Department at "Taller De Jazz Caracas," the most prestigious jazz academy in Venezuela. Since I moved to New York City, I have become an active member of the exciting city’s jazz scene, both as a performer and educator, playing with artists such as Will Vinson, Doug Weiss, Kenny Werner, Tim Hagans, Mike Holober, Mimi Jones, Lukas Gabric, Livio Almeida, Josiah Boornazian, Antonio Mazzei, Brent Vaartstra, Coyote Anderson, just to name a few.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching drums and percussion since 2005, back in Venezuela I was part of the teaching staff for "El Sistema" and also was the head of the Jazz percussion department at "El Taller de Jazz Caracas" one of the most prestigious music schools in Venezuela. In addition, I've been teaching private student for more than 10 years, from different ages and backgrounds. Some of my students are now professional players studying at or graduated from prestigious music schools such as Berklee School of Music and The Players School of Music.
METHODS USED
My methods vary depending on student age, ability and goals with the instrument. I believe no everybody learn the same way so I adapt to find the best, most efficient and fun path to teach my students. For Children I like to emphasize the importance of the fundamentals and technique through fun exercises and simple tunes they can play along to. As the student progreses and grows more interest in the instrument, which I guarantee they will, classes will start to get more challenging. For adults, I like to first make an assessment of the student's abilities and and goals with the instrument, so I can taylor the right method and approach for you.
LESSON STYLE
To become a better musician, we need to look honestly at where we stand in our development and do the work necessary to overcome technical issues. I believe that most issues are best addressed by carefully working on the instrument’s fundamentals. In my classes I focus on building up strong foundations and, from there, give the student the necessary tools to develop confidence in the instrument and the ability to perform any style of music. In addition, I try to find what inspires the student and help them connect with it, there is nothing more rewarding that seeing a passionate student progressing in every class.
