My teaching philosophy is to develop my student’s potential. The autobiography by Russian opera singer Galina Vishnevskaya was truly an inspiration to me. One of her teachers almost destroyed her voice, while another revived it and developed to be one of the best voices of her time. That is what I strive to do when I teach my students – to realize their potential, to give them skills and knowledge, to inspire them to grow and to reach higher horizons. I try to carefully nurture what they have while building on their strengths.
I started teaching at the prep department of the conservatory in 1992, and have been teaching ever since. I teach all levels - from beginners to intermediate to advanced students at the university level. Regular practicing is essential in retaining progress. I give my students a combination of classical and popular repertoire to expose them to many different styles. If they are interested in composing their own music, I definitely will help with that as well! I tailor my lessons to each student's individual personality.
With my younger students I like starting out with Piano Adventures by Faber. I also like giving them songs that they know and like - that gets students excited about the repertoire they are learning. With older students I ask them which styles they prefer, and then we also find a suitable method for them. In general, I like giving students a variety of styles and pieces to keep them interested. I use my own arrangements as well. I organize student recitals to give students an opportunity to perform in front of people.
The best reward for me is to see how students progress. I am happy to know that I took part in that process. I also love helping students to understand the principles and applications of music theory, as well as to develop their ear with various aural skills and rhythm exercises. I strive to pass the life-long passion for music to my students in the hope that it will last for the rest of their lives. I help students to develop good practicing habits and skills to be more efficient in their practicing.
