I have been playing the cello since just before 6th grade and have played consistently until college where I continue to play solos and in an ensemble. I am currently attending Austin Community College for a degree in Music Composition. On top of cello, I have arranged and composed multiple pieces that I had the opportunity to play with the school orchestra for both projects and just for fun, including arrangements for 4 cellos, and small ensembles. I have also been learning piano and guitar, and I am always excited to learn new instruments.
I started taking cello lessons over the summer before 6th grade, and played in the ensemble at my middle school and high school, continuing lessons throughout. I have also participated in solo and ensemble events through the schools. I have never taught before, as it is only now something I have to start doing, but I am excited to begin teaching others. The extent of my teaching only includes helping other cellists with pieces I may have previously played, and working with a quartet on pieces that I already know.
For younger beginners, I will start with the basics of cello, mostly through the Essential Elements books. Once the student is ready, we will mostly stick to the Suzuki method, starting at cello book 1, and moving through each piece. For older beginners, I will still try to stick to Suzuki as a format, but will be open to letting the student choose what they might want to start playing. I will also try to keep a log of what students have worked on and need to work on, and would encourage them to do the same.
While I am new to teaching, I am hoping to create a comfortable environment where students do not feel rushed to complete pieces or practices, and we will always move at the students pace. If a student is not yet ready to move on to the next piece, then we will continue polishing whatever they need before moving on. I will always keep a log of what the student is currently working on, and what they should work on between lessons so we can always make sure things get done, and can move on to new things.
