I am a professional musician trained in New Orleans playing all styles of music however my primary style is jazz. I studied jazz guitar at the conservatory New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and graduated from Loyola University New Orleans in 2016 with a Bachelor in Music Industry Studies. I toured internationally with Grammy nominated trumpeter Christian Scott and have collaborated with Nicholas Payton, Saul William, Pell and many other artists. I have my own band called Yung vul that combines New Orleans modern jazz, hip hop, and punk rock.
Since an early age I have had mentors and teachers show me by example how important music education is to preserving culture. I have been teaching for five years, first teaching middle school students at music summer camps in New Orleans like the New Jazz School. After graduating from Loyola University I opened a guitar studio, teaching all ages and talent levels. I also taught guitar and piano lessons to students (5-50) at the New Orleans Music Academy. For the 2017-2018 school year I returned to my alma mater, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, to teach jazz guitar and ensembles while also teaching digital audio production to incarcerated high school students at the Orleans Parish Youth Study Center.
I make an individualized curriculum for each of my students based on their learning desires and their talent levels. For beginning students it is important to learn standard techniques such as chords and techniques, I use songs and beginner method books based on a student's learning goals, age, and talent level for lesson materials. For intermediate students I teach sight reading using the Melodic Rhythms for guitar book by William Leavitt and jazz music theory. For more advanced students I guide them in developing their own unique style by transcribing from records and learning more difficult songs. With my intermediate and advanced students I also focus on illuminating the logic of the instrument the instrument.
From my own experience learning music, my greatest motivation has been the fun of discovering something new. I motivate my students with the same ideology. I build my student's curriculum based on music that they have a love and passion for, music that they will be excited to learn. I also teach students practice techniques that will bolster the students growth with efficiency and fun. I help students to track gradual growth in their practice by honing their routines into healthy learning habits.
