Overview:
I have studied at Oberlin Conservatory and Rutgers State University and studied with some of the best teachers. I studied jazz trumpet for my bachelor's and Masters degrees. I moved to NYC in 2009 and have performed with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Kim Burrell, Geri Allen and Wallace Toney. I taught at the community outreach program at Rutgers State University and have been a teacher with Musika for 10 years. I also play music with my own project Wave Magnetik where I produce music using Ableton and perform by DJing while playing trumpet and singing.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught music for six years at Montclair State University and Rutgers Community Music Program. I also have taught with Musika for 10 years. I have toured with my own bands as well. My first quarter Sight travel across America playing a fusion of African traditional music and jazz. I released 2 albums under that name and have had the music played on satalite radio. Now I play with my solo project Wave Magnetik. Here I produce music in Ableton Live and play trumpet with it. It is edm mixed with jazz.
METHODS USED
I use the method created by Adolf Herseth (Principle trumpeter in the Chicago Symphony for 50 years). I learned this method from William Fielder at Rutgers. This concept is based on using air as the primary energy source for producing sound. We will work on strengthening the breathing apparatus to be able to produce a pure clear tone that is without distortion. From there we work on being able to keep that same sound thought the full range of the instrument. The we will incorporate articulations studies to better define the clarity of the sound.
LESSON STYLE
I create an environment where the student can feel as if they can ask any question and can make mistakes without being looked down on. I encourage the student to problem solve their own issues through critical thinking. My goal is to teach you so you don't need to be taught anymore. We will work on a given concept continuously until it is understood and able to be produced. I will use positive reinforcement so you understand what is the right thing and what is not. Without that it is very difficult to progress.
