I am motivated as an instructor to help my students become the best they can be and have fun learning. I love drumming. It has been a big part of my life since the age of 7. Drumming has provided so many opportunities in my life, from opening for national acts, to traveling the country, learning about the music industry, working in the business as a session drummer, to working as an artist representative for a subsidiary of Sony. I have toured with 3 national acts ranging from metal, to pop, and free form psychedelic rock. Growing up I was exposed to all types of music ranging from Jazz, classical, Blues, Rock, Metal, Funk, and Latin. My drumming influences are, (Danny Carey) of Tool, (John Bonham) of Led Zeppelin, (Ringo Star) of the Beatles, (Steve Smith) of Journey, (Denise Chambers) of Santana, (Carter Beauford) of the Dave Matthews Band, (Louie Bellson) big band jazz drummer, (Chris Adler) of Lamb of God, (David Silveria) of Korn and so many more.
My teaching experience started in Baltimore, mostly backstage at local band jobs when other drummers would ask how I did certain groves and fills with speed and intensity while giving the band breathing room. I started to notice that the technique the other drummers were referring to was generally based on what I learned from the drummers who influenced me, and I was able to break it down well for those interested in learning more about it. I always enjoy sharing my approach to drumming with other drummers. Two years ago I hired a private instructor to coach me in the fine points of teaching. I then started teaching and love every minute of it. I am expanding my client scheduling from 5 per week to 20 per week. I believe I have found a calling in this profession, and love knowing that I am working my passion while helping other people grow as drummers, too.
With beginner students of all ages, I start with the Elementary Drum Method Book by Roy Burns, Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method book by Carmine Appice, and the Drum Rudiment Dictionary by Jay Wanamaker. I am a fan of helping my students learn their favorite songs, and will take time to go over the songs, bar by bar. Once the first 3 books are mastered you will move up to intermediate drum techniques, and studies to assist in developing total limb independence. Once students master these basics through the classes and the occasional take home studies, we will then work on rudiments around the whole drum set to develop freeform soloing, before moving on to Jazz and Latin beats. I ask my students to work on rudiments at home comfortably between TV commercials, and to work on the notation, reading and groove lessons for a minimum of 20 minutes per day, for low stress progression. But the more you do, the better the results. Whichever approach works best for my students, will include a relaxed, fun atmosphere.
My teaching style is a mix of fun and education. I was a student who struggled with ADD and I want to make each student's learning experience fun as the rudiments are mastered. I include drum set sheet music, and learning the student's favorite songs at their pace. If they need help with school band charts they are welcomed to bring them for study at the lesson. Bottom line - whatever you want to tackle, I strive to find the teaching method that works best for you and work in the fun.
