As a teacher of piano, I am highly motivating and encouraging to my students. I strive to make my lessons enjoyable and believe in the success of my students. It is their musical goals and endeavors that motivate my teaching style towards them. I graduated from San Diego State with a Bachelor's degree in Piano Performance and a Masters in Instrumental Conducting. I am constantly striving to better myself as a musician, thus continue to practice on a daily basis. I am currently working on a mammoth composition for piano for which I will be eventually recording. Piano has been a passion for me since childhood and I hope to share my gifts with future students.
I have been teaching piano for almost 20 years now in styles from classical to new age to pop and rock. I am currently teaching private lessons through the Guitar Center Lesson's programs both in their studios and online. In addition to teaching private piano lessons, I currently am teaching music courses at both San Diego Mesa College and Palomar Community College. Along with beginning and intermediate piano courses, I teach a wide variety of music classes including Music Appreciation, Music Fundamentals, Music History, and Music Theory. I also serve as an online tutor for music courses at several sites. I have a deep passion for teaching and have never been more happy doing so as I currently am.
I take a rather traditional approach to teaching. Pure musical selections are first and foremost of course, but I find it essential that student's learn their scales, progressions and various other exercises no matter what style of music brings them most enjoyment. I am very solid on teaching the fundamentals of music such as rhythm, melody and harmony. Teaching good habits from the beginning is imperative and having a solid foundation in the fundamentals will assure that the student will have the keys to success. I teach from a variety of method books including those from Bastien and Alfred.
Whether it's teaching piano or music theory, it is a pure joy to see a student's face light up when they achieve success! Whether teaching a beginner or intermediate student, I find it important to establish a strong communication and rapport from day one. Keeping them focused from that point is one the greatest challenges a teacher is presented with, but Always a welcomed challenge! From time to time a student's interest will wane and this is when it is important to become flexible in my approach. I am constantly adjusting my methods so that they are tailored to a student's specific needs and goals. Bringing them joy in what they are doing is my number one goal. When they find this joy I find it myself!
