I’m a very dedicated, passionate musician who loves working with students and sharing the beauty that is music. I spent my teenage years playing in a variety of bands and touring the country with said bands which only further solidified my love of music. I then attended Western Illinois to study music at a collegiate level and there I received formal training in both classical and jazz music, I graduated this past May of 2018 and since then have been playing full time with a professional cover band named Karma Committee who I play with most every weekend at a variety of venues throughout the Chicago area as well as some venues in Ohio and Iowa.
Teaching music is something I have always been involved in and not only helps spread my love of music but it also makes me a better player by being able to explain the different intricacies of an instrument. Bass is main focus instrument though I play many others and am happy to teach one or all the instruments I know, for I am a firm believer in being as versatile as possible in music and in that way remain open minded which helps you be a better musician. My goal for lessons is to create a fun environment for the student to learn and want to play, practice, and enjoy coming to lessons, and whatever I can do to create a better experience for the student is something I am always happy to do.
I start lessons with new students by asking what they would like to learn and ask what their overall goal is so I can better adjust lessons to achieve the students hopes and goals. For beginner students I start with helping them understand the parts of the instrument which I believe can help a student better understand how it works and therefore how to better perform on it. I do believe that while scales, arpeggios, and exercises are very important it is also very important to create fun exercises that are actual music instead of just a scalar excercise, because at least for me playing scales for an hour a day is not why I got into music. So my goal is always to make sure the student is enjoying the exercises and make it fun for them.
As I’ve mentioned my ultimate goal is to help a student develop a love and passion for music, this is achieved by catering to each student as best as I can and make sure the lessons are something they want to do, I firmly believe a teacher can truly make or break a students interest in something, and I am hear to help nurture a students interest and love of music. We will set realistic, attainable goals every week so the student has something to work towards and can actually see their own progress and want to continue getting better. I do believe learning to read music is a very necessary skill but that learning to use your ear is just as important, a good ear takes time to develop but is very attainable and I hope to help students use every way possible to better understand, love, and enjoy music.
