I enjoy performing, teaching, and sharing my knowledge of music with others. In 2011, I graduated from Morehead State University with a Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance and in 2014, I graduated from the University of Louisville with a Masters degree in Vocal Performance. During my undergraduate and graduate careers, I was given the opportunity to travel and perform in Costa Rica, Austria, Hungary, and Poland.
I have been a private voice instructor since 2008, where I started on the campus of Morehead State University. My students consisted of majors and non-majors. I then opened up a studio in Morehead Kentucky where my students ranged in age from 8-18 years of age. When I moved to Louisville for my Masters, I began working for Folsom Academy of the Arts, Guitar Center Studios and for the University of Louisville as a Teaching Assistant.
Music fundamentals are most important in the beginning stages. When teaching kids I really focus on posture, breath, building repertoire, and technique. For adults, I start by finding out if they are adult beginner, or adult intermediate, depending on the knowledge of singing and technique. My instruction is really based on the student’s interest in repertoire and the rate at which they learn.
I am an advocate for putting the music in the body. I studied with a professor for 6 years who was an expert in Dalcroze Eurhythmics which focuses on singing with gestures and dancing out rhythms and melody lines. I love solfege and incorporate it every chance I get when learning a piece. For example, Kodaly Methodology singing with hand signs, which is a good practice for all ages. When it comes to singing, it's not always easy even with just one person looking at you. It is my job to make lessons as comfortable and relaxed as possible. I believe positive reinforcement and encouragement fuels the students and keeps them engaged.
