My #1 passion is teaching music. I'm currently the band teacher at Cary Christian School. I've been playing trombone professional for almost 20 years, my most recent gigs were playing for Princess Cruises full time, and been teaching for 20 years. My passion for playing isn't what it used to be, so I'm focusing my musical efforts on teaching. At Cary Christian school, I teach ages 10-18, and currently have 5 beginning students and am looking to take on only 10 more. I'm currently accepting beginning students for guitar and ukulele, and up to advanced students for trombone.
I started giving trombone lessons to grade and high school student's since 2005. In 2006 I started leading concert and jazz bands. Immediately out of college in 2008 I worked as a music teacher teaching guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and voice for 3 years. In 2011, I moved to Peru where I was the #1 on call jazz trombonist in Lima, and was a trombone professor at the National Conservatory of music where I taught trombone technique and jazz improvisation. After that I played for Princess Cruises. Most recently I'm the band teacher at Cary Christian School.
Most teachers use a Hal Leonard beginning book. Essential Elements (EE) is popular, as well as Accent on Achievement. I'll be using EE for beginners. I drill ear training, and will have the student memorize simple songs to beginning not only increasing their repertoire, but a fun way of practicing scales. Depending on the level, there are different books that are appropriate, however I focus on the fundamentals with each student and add on. Based on the student's goals, we strengthen weaknesses to improve their facility on the instrument. Song selection is important as well. I'd rather have a student performance a simple piece of music well, rather than a challenging piece of music that is being expressed clearly.
I start with the end in mind. Once your student has established clear, realistic goals with me, all the focus is on reaching those goals. It is also made clear that it is the student's responsibility to come into each lesson showing clear evidence that they've practiced the music. I'm stern about this. If the student hasn't put in the time, I will send the student home mid-lesson and they lose that lesson. At the same time, each lesson's focus is having fun while learning, and giving them only the necessarily tools they need at the right time to ensure steady progress. I encourage every student to make excellence the standard.
