BA, Lewis & Clark College, Guitar Performance
I am a passionate and driven teacher whose focus is always on my students' musical goals and development. I focus on roots American styles: the blues, early rock, bluegrass, country, folk, and jazz. I graduated with a degree in Guitar Performance from Lewis & Clark College, where I studied performance under renowned Portland guitarist Dan Balmer and music theory under Portland pianist Susan Smith. Authentic and time-honored musical styles are my emphasis and serve as the foundations upon which my performances and lessons are based. I play in several bands in the Portland area, including an acoustic bluegrass band and an electric blues/rock band.
I began teaching five years ago while attending Lewis & Clark college, giving lessons for free and for trade among the students. Since then, I have given many lessons to students, friends, fans, and to my 8-year-old little sister. I love teaching both children and adults, and I am a patient and courteous instructor. I have experience teaching a variety of musical styles, and each lesson will be tailored to the specific student's particular musical passion. I started taking music lessons when I was 7 years old, so I know what it's like from both ends; you can count on me to be simultaneously serious and lighthearted, driven by my students' desire to learn more!
My lessons are rooted in concrete music that my students are passionate about. From the get-go my students learn to play real music that sounds good, and every instruction and new piece that we play is rooted in the student's passion for and enjoyment of the music. I find that this method of teaching is particular essential when teaching children, who frequently wont practice unless they really enjoy what they're practicing. Physical technique is an important part of my lessons and is emphasized from the start but, especially in the beginning of the process, I don't let technique-related stumbling blocks prevent a student from accessing the music that has inspired and driven them to take lessons.
My teaching style is casual and professional, and you can expect low-stress top-notch musical education from me. Though I am lighthearted, I am serious and passionate about the music and inspire students with acknowledgment and praise when goals are reached. Musical accomplishemnts (learning to play real songs/pieces) are the best fuel for fire, and I push students to reach for more challenging and engaging performances. At the same time, music should be fun, and so should music lessons.
