BMed, University of Southern Mississippi MM, University of North Carolina School of the Arts
Overview:
I am passionate about Music Education and teaching students to help them reach their full potential as musicians. I recently graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Music Education with an emphasize in clarinet. In the Fall of 2017, I will begin my Masters of Music in Clarinet Performance. During my time as an undergrad, I have performed across the world including Canada and Austria while participating in summer clarinet academies. I love teaching clarinet and want to one day teaching on the collegiate level!
EXPERIENCE
I graduated with his Bachelors in Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi where I studied clarinet with Dr. Jackie McIlwain (2013-2017) and Dr. Jonathan Holden (2012-2013). During my undergrad years, I developed an interest in learning strategies and began researching how the brain works for the better use of musician practice time. In the Fall of 2017, I will be pursuing my Master of Music in Clarinet where I will be studying with Dr. Oskar Espina-Ruiz at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. During my undergrad career, I've performed across the United States and studied music history and opera in Vienna, Austria (2014). Furthermore, I have performed in Masterclasses with Julian Bliss (2015), Dr. Julie Detweiler (2014), Dr. Kip Franklin (2016), Dr. Frank Kowalsky (2015). In the Summer of 2017, I participated in the Lift Clarinet Academy at Colorado State University where I was selected to perform in a Masterclass for Dr. Robert Spring. In the future, I would like to study at a European Conservatory and pursue my Doctorate of Musical Arts.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I assess the skills and create a personalized plan to get them to the next level using the Klose, Baermann, and selected solo repertoire. My goal after a year is for a student to be comfortable enough to make music in front of an audience. Students will master scales which are found appropriate for them and prepare a weekly etude to help the learning process. Students will need to practice daily to progress and receive the most out of lessons. Furthermore, I urge students to listen to as much clarinet music to help feed their musical soul.
LESSON STYLE
Music Education requires passion, dedications, and creativity for there to be a success in both performing and teaching. Students should be allowed to explore their creativity while having an active modeling system to help reinforce and guide their curiosity. Students should never to fear of going to school because of favoritism, bullying, or discrimination, but should be filled with joy and excitement about learning. Anyone can be taught music, and every student can learn music. If enough time and dedications are devoted to both the students, teachers, and parents’ behalf, the students will be successful.
