I'm a vocal and instrumental instructor for over fourteen years who is passionate about helping students both express their thoughts and feelings through music and develop their skills in music as a door to open other opportunities in life. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Music from Abilene Christian University and have enjoyed performing in many excellent instrumental and vocal musical groups. I have had the benefit of sharing music in a wide variety of settings, including serving as the Director for the Montbello Drum Line during their trip to Japan in 2013, performing with the Colorado Symphony Chorus in "Too Hot To Handel", leading students and a full Coors Field crowd in the "7th Inning Stretch (Take Me Out To The Ballgame)" at a Rockies game, and writing and directing the school song for Roxborough Intermediate School.
As a professional, state-licensed music teacher for over fourteen years, I began teaching in Carlsbad, New Mexico in 2001 before moving to Colorado in 2007 and serving in Douglas County School District, Denver Public Schools, and Jefferson County Public Schools. Encouraging students to practice on a regular basis is the cornerstone of musical growth and development, and I help especially younger students find the balance between popular music and classical music as a means of motivating practice and developing their skills. Students are encouraged to perform publicly on a regular basis, enter competitions, and compose their own music so that they can feel good about their accomplishments and always have another goal to look forward to. I invite students of all ages and all levels to expand their skills and passion for music!
As beginners, I recommend the first Hal Leonard Essential Elements Band books with EEi. The EEi feature allows students to access online features that coordinate with their private lessons and enhance their ability to learn. As students progress through the book, I add solo repertoire to the student's EEi account so they can both hear it played and record their own performance of each work of band music. Guitar students start with Essential Elements, piano students begin with Piano Adventures/Adult Piano Adventures, and both offer interactive online components which enhance the student's resources and ability to practice and learn between lessons. I try to find out what each student is most interested in and students are encouraged to select specific songs, solo works, or other music which they can use to begin developing their performance song list.
Nothing is more satisfying than seeing students passionately pursue and succeed in the musical goals they set for themselves. I encourage students to set smaller, individual goals that can help them reach the larger goals they may have. Each student is unique and all students deserve to learn in the mode or format that is most effective. It is my role to both welcome the uniqueness of each student as well as offer multiple styles from which students can learn. I also seek to develop each student's skills based on their individual musical strengths. Students' dominant learning style opens up the possibility of understanding other dimensions of music, using all of the senses to enhance students' musical skill, artistic quality, and appreciation.
