I have been playing and teaching drumset & marching percussion for over thirty years. If you're looking to learn, improve or master in either category, then you have found the right teacher. You will learn to be a better, more versatile player, while learning to read percussion music at the same time.
Currently I play, professionally , with The Elkin Big Band, Elkin, NC, The Fetch Baxter Band, Galax, VA area and The Illusion Highway Band in Mt. Airy, NC.
I have also played with some of the best known bands in the country, in some of the largest most famous venues.
I taught drumset at the Drummer's Collective in New York City for over five years. While in New York, I also worked in several music recording studios and played in many Jazz & Blues clubs.
I taught marching percussion at The University of Maryland, Appalachain State University, Georgia Tech and The United States Naval Academy (Drum & Bugle Corps). I'm also a former percussion arranger/instructor of the United States Marine Corps Drum & Bugle Corps.
I have also been the arranger/instructor for several high school programs. Marching Band & concert percussion ensembles.
All of my students receive custom lessons, written by myself, mixed in with standard lesson books. Since I have always believed that "one size does not necessarily fit all" I have found this to be a better approach to rapidly putting my students at the next level.
Being able to read charts in marching percussion and drumset, in particular, will put you in a position of great demand when it comes to begin your professional career. (Some advanced players may not be interested in learning to read & I will honor your attitudes in this area.)
Students, whether beginners or advanced players, will all find challenges that will keep you engaged, interested and motivated in keeping your percussion ambitions moving forward.
In marching percussion you will learn all aspects of marching percussion ... positioning of your body, sticks, playing positions and the military bearing required by all high school, college and DCI organizations. You will be required to learn to play utilizing a metronome that will help you learn to set, keep & maintain proper meter. We will concentrate on all 40 standard rudiments while incorporating them into individual solos.
In drumset percussion you will learn many of the same things stated above for marching percussion but focused on the drumset, ie, use of metronome, standard drumset licks in all music styles and applying rudiments to drumset.
