Overview:
Music has been a part of my life since the age of 10. I started on saxophone in the 6th grade and continued through high school and college. I was a part of the University’s Wind ensemble, jazz band, and marching band. I had the opportunity to perform with Grammy Award winners and world renown composers. Among the years I have learned to play other instruments, broadening my musical abilities. These days I am a gigging and recording artist, from recording with a variety of a bands to writing and performing original music.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching music during college teaching private lessons part time 7 years ago. I focus on each individual according to their experience and push them beyond their initial limitations. Over the years I’ve learned how to apply my own learning expirences into my teaching techniques. Individual practice is very important to me and necessary to succeed in my studio, one hour daily is ideal. This way we can speed up the progress and the student gets the most out of each lesson. Maintaining a fun environment is a priority as well, the more work you put the more you’ll enjoy the lessons.
METHODS USED
For beginning students I will start with fundamentals, music theory and basic music reading lessons. For more advanced students I teach those same methods but will also apply improvisation and song writing to the lessons with my own “4 Steps to Song Writing” method. This easy method to song writing will help the student develop an ear for melody and harmony composing. Each student will take home music to practice over the week to prepare for the next lesson. There are no grades in my studio but the more practice the student does on their own the more they get out of the lesson.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is very unique in that its based off improvisation and ear training with music theory lessons. Having just one of the three is a great skill, but developing an ability to read, play and improvise music is what, in my opinion, makes a great musician. I acknowledge hard work and dedicate myself to developing that passion for music in each lesson. Having a desire to get better is essential as it will take time, practice and patience. I strive to encourage my student to want to be a great musician. I will tailor my lesson plan according to the student so that the student can succeed.
