Overview:
I am an enthusiastic and energetic teacher that loves to help people meet their musical goals and succeed elsewhere in life. I graduated from UGA, in 2010, with a Vocal Performance degree. While I have a deep respect for classical music, I love rock 'n roll and enjoy helping others learn good technique that will last a lifetime. I have performed across the United States and Europe as a solo singer, in vocals groups, and rock 'n roll bands.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching voice 6 years ago, while still in my own undergraduate studies. Teaching bass and piano quickly followed once I realized how much I enjoyed the teaching side of music. I learned to love music at an early age, which got me into taking lessons, and eventually learning the process that is required to move a student forward. Slow and steady progress in all areas of music is the way I have learned, and is the way that I teach. Singing and playing music with world famous acts like Bootsy Collins, Ben Folds, and the Atlanta Rhythm Section has also provided a view into pop music that is not readily available through classical studies.
METHODS USED
My teaching methods for all instruments are to start with the basics and slowly build the foundation of a good, overall musician. For piano, I begin with Faber Piano Adventures and Beginning Piano for Adults by Bastien & Bastien. With vocal instruction, I prefer to begin with vocal excrsises to strengthen the voice. Once the student is ready, we will move into repertoire like the first and second book of solos (for any range) by G. Schirmer, Inc. Because diction is so important, Diction by John Moriarty is my prefered text. Bass lessons are similar to voice lessons, because we will start with basic muscle memory and technique and then move on to repertoire.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is built on a foundation of encouragement and self-improvement. For a student to truly progress, he or she needs to be inspired and that's what my job is mostly about. I take great pride in being able to motivate and push students to want to get better on their own time, with the lesson time being available for learning new skills and techniques. Always being positive, even in criticism, is important to me. I believe students want to learn, and need an environment that encourages forward progress in a nurturing way.
