Over 10 years experience playing guitar in several rock bands! Over 5 years of piano experience playing numerous recitals and formals.
Overview:
I'm a passionate artist who took the leap from a financial career to creative education! I graduated UT with a degree in mathematics and started working as a retirement consultant. The three years of my financial career was new and intimidating, but my love for art and music was always comfortable and freeing. I chose to leave a lucrative career once I found that building a relationship with students and sharing my knowledge was not only more rewarding, but fun and exciting as well. I've played piano and guitar for most of my life and have to most experience in hard rock, but I love all genres of music and love to help individuals create their own sound!
EXPERIENCE
Most of my professional tutoring experience has been in mathematics! I tutored in high school, college, and over a year at various agencies. I find the experience has helped me teach my band mates music over the years. There are many transferable skills. I've played in numerous bands over the years ranging from soft indie rock to heavy metal. My catalog of original music is extensive and there are frequently written parts for many instruments. I've had to teach four to six instrument parts to the band mates for a single song. Stopping a jam to nail down a part can be frustrating and slow the momentum of a jam session, but I've always felt it is imperative to keep everyone knowledgeable and in pocket. So in my music teaching experience, I've learned to keep a positive and patient vibe. There are always little humps to get over when learning new instruments or material, but encouragement will lead to big reward once the new skill is ingrained properly.
METHODS USED
Consistency and practice are the key to improvement but keeping the jams fun and exciting is what keeps the students coming back and practicing. I do have scales, chords, and basic melodies I believe every student should learn, but I like to learn each student's unique style and cater to it. Everyone has a different sound and inspiration. I feel part of my job is to help individuals find their voice in whatever instrument they're playing. Motivation can be the biggest issue for the students. There is always a boredom element when practicing the same thing over and over again; so i like to add some spontaneity and life to practice sessions. I'll slide in an improvised solo while the student is strumming chords or teach the student little melodies within the scale. and I'll end the sessions playing through an entire song or exercise with the volume cranked up!
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is very laid back and encouraging. I love seeing a student pick up a new instrument but I usually sense a lot of nerves and bad self talk. I believe when learning anything, one should be comfortable to fail and ask questions. I try to make sure this is understood right away. I have a basic structure at the beginning of my lessons that includes scales and chords, but I like to use the rest of the sessions to work on what the student has been inspired by. I invest in my students and listen to what's on their playlist and find songs that might fit. The end of the session is usually a jam when the student and I will play something familiar to end the session with confidence.
