"Esse quam videri"-To be, rather than appear to be
My teaching experience began in my early days of learning music. I was able to learn and find a method of madness to fit whichever person was asking me to show them how to play what I play. Although I was young, I was eager to see the results of excitement from a friend or cousin learning the art of music in the simplest ways. Fast forward years later, and teaching fell into my lap at Big Spring Intermediate 5th grade level. There I taught large classes the instruments of recorders, ukuleles, and keyboard and choral music. It was through these years I found students with a desire to challenge their skills and I formed my own private music school "Tuning Spirits" There we learned Rock, punk, RnB, Blues, Pop and Latin. These ensembles performed on professional stages opening for artists such as Aaron Watson and Los Lonely Boys.
My methods include a interview process where I get to know the student's goals and desires. Sometimes this includes learning a certain piece of music or style of music or interest to jam with friends as a hobby. When I can get a sense of their goals it helps me design a course fit for your student's learning interest. We begin with a theory review of basics and then follow a ear training test to see if the student can identify changing pitches and rhythm tests. Once we've established a basic working of character and music theory we will begin to learning the anatomy of our instruments and how to handle and care for them. Now the fun part begins. We will then immediately dive into making noise, chords, warm up practices and small challenge games on the instrument! 3rd sessions we will begin to focus on the student's interest in genre styles and selected pieces of music. It's no fun if you're not learning what you want to learn! I always encourage jamming with other friends and people to help put your practice into practicality. Making music is fun with more!
My teaching style is taught with expectations. Although I aim to move at the student's learning pace, it is important to hold accountability on the student's behalf when we're not instruction. Consistent practice will be necessary for growth and I like to check in with students 2 days before next lessons to ensure the material has been understood and reviewed. From this point we can ensure progress. When a student does not review the content for the next lesson, it causes a sense of frustration and nervousness in the student's ability to comprehend the next lesson. As your instructor when these moments happen it is my job to express that this is a learning experience and we must learn to prepare for success rather than set our selves up for self defeat. Just like a karate program we will celebrate student milestones and reaching their goals! No matter the age, it's all about the small victories in life
