Overview:
I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I started playing piano when I was 10. By 15 I was performing at local venues throughout the state of Ohio. At 15 I also started playing the guitar; over the years I have added the bass, drums and percussion to my resume. I have had the great opportunity to meet and perform with many amazing musicians, as well as travel all over north America and Europe. I love being able to share my love and enthusiasm for music with my students and show all it can give them.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my college days when I began tutoring other students in 2001. After graduating in 2003 I transitioned to private lessons and have been teaching ever since. Regular practice on a consistent basis is one of the main points I emphasize to my students. It helps them progress and gain a passion for their instrument. A combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their instrument and motivate them to continue learning. I encourage my students to perform as well as work on their own compositions. This helps them feel good about their accomplishments and keeps them exploring their instrument. My students are encouraged to perform and enter competitions, as well as work on their own composing. I am always looking to bring on new students of all ages.
METHODS USED
For beginning students that are children, I like to start with Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements or any other book that has the basic principles of music in them. Once the student has progressed and has a good grasp of the fundamentals, I will bring in other repertoire appropriate to their level. For adults, I like to find out what the student is interested in and then tailor the lesson toward that to keep lessons engaging and fun no matter what their abilities are. I always try to keep the lessons fun and entertaining.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is better than watching a student make the transition from one level of playing to the next. It is important that each student progress at his or her own pace. This is achieved by setting realistic goals each week. I love to encourage students' success by acknowledging their accomplishments, no matter how small. This helps fuel their desire to get better. I want to know what inspires my students so I can bring that into the lesson every week. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
