I enjoy sharing the joy of making music with my students. I studied piano performance at Jacob School of Music and piano pedagogy at Longy School of Music (Cambridge, MA). Born into a musical family, I grew up playing music and ensembles as a family. I also played cello in school orchestra and joined choir as an adult. I have served as an accompanist for singers and instrumentalists in music school, church and private concerts. I encourage my students to participate in ensembles, to make music with other instrumentalists as time permit.
I have taught students over 10 years, privately and also in music studios, from absolute novice to intermediate levels. The students come from many nations and with diverse backgrounds. Most students begin to play for fun, but can become earnest quests. I encourage students to explore the possibilities of sound through playing the piano. I believe variety is the spice, and ensure students have a palette of musical styles. I help students in musical appreciation, studies, rehearsals, and beyond.
For beginners I typically start with the Piano Adventure series, and supplement with other familiar tunes for holidays. Depending on interest, students will receive additional music. From early intermediate level I assign music from baroque, classical, romantic or modern eras, and technical exercises like Hannon or Czerny. Students are encouraged to bring music they would like to play. I customize short technical exercises to help in finger dexterity. I introduce Dalcroze’s Solfège to help students appreciate musical sound and physicalization.
It is very important that the student can enjoy playing while learning music. I assign long and short pieces, so students can mark their progress and accomplishments. I ease the challenge of learning new pieces through helping them to practice properly from the start. I instill good listening in the sound they play and how they play. Students are initiated into the world of motifs, patterns, phrasings and musical structures for musical appreciation. I encourage students to develop their unique styles and expressivity.
Elaine is a very knowledgeable piano teacher. She is extremely patient. My son loves working with her. Highly recommended.
