I was self taught at the age of 13. I accidently discovered I had musical interests when I found a broken guitar in the poor neighborhood where I grew up in. Since then, I participated in every guitar event I could find in highschool and College. In Highschool I was part of the Guitar club, performed during school lunches, went to musicals, and took the guitar classes as my elective. In college there was no club to be apart of but I did take two guitar classes and music theory. I also performed with friends where ever i could. It was my minor so I didn't pursue it as a degree but I assure you, the extensive knowledge is still there.
EXPERIENCE
At 14 years old I started teaching younger siblings of friends and friends. What I did was ask them what songs they wanted to learn. It helped keep their interests and spark their passion for the instrument. One of the kids I taught pursued a music related career while others said I inspired them. Being told I inspired someone was awesome.
METHODS USED
For beginners who are children, I help them learn to identify what all the parts of the instrument are, and what they do. For example, I taught my 2-year-old niece how to play the ukulele by helping her learn how to play the string. After she became comfortable with playing the string, I then proceeded to teach her how to push down behind the shiny stick, the "fret." She was so happy that she was learning, without ever feeling overwhelmed by the information. For adults, I am just as patient unless otherwise specified by my student.
LESSON STYLE
I'll never forget the first time I taught someone how to play. I had brought my Spirit Gibson with me and showed it to them. I told them about all the musicians they loved who owned a Gibson; told them they were seeing something apart of history. When I handed it to them I saw their eyes light up as if they were being initiated into knighthood. I just want to see that spark in all the students I teach.
