BFA in Jazz Guitar Performance from the New School
Overview:
I have been teaching guitar in NYC for the last 20+ years to both adults and kids. During that time I have also played in many bands working in New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey, and beyond, playing guitar, singing, and recording, co-leading the bands Mixtape and Small Multiples + recorded at the well known Bunker Studio by producer Aaron Nevezie. I received my BFA in jazz guitar performance from the New School in 2001 and also teach guitar at the Bank Street school on the upper west side of Manhattan.
EXPERIENCE
Over the last 20+ years of teaching I have developed an approach of customizing lessons to suit every student.
Since students tend to have widely varying degrees of experience as well as goals I have found that this is the best approach.
I will always sit down with each student and together we can figure out what it is that they would like to do, and what is the most straight forward way is to get there. Whether it is jazz improvisation, classic rock, blues, or folk we figure out what needs to happen to move toward each students particular goals.
METHODS USED
I will almost always start lessons with beginners who are children with the Alfred method books.
These are a very straight forward 3 book set that takes kids from knowing almost nothing technical about music to being able to play and read quite complex arrangements.
Once we get our feet planted in this area I will expand into using chord charts and other materials to supplement.
Once that is begun we usually start to make up a list of songs that the student may be interested in learning so I can build up the vocabulary to achieve at least a simple arrangement of those songs.
LESSON STYLE
A hybrid of traditional notation, playing by ear, basic right and left hand technique followed by custom lesson plans based on individual students' interests and artistic direction.
My style is generally as relaxed or as focused as the student is ready for.
Meaning that if the student is able to practice an hour or more a day that will lead to a more focused atmosphere, and if there's less time to practice then we adjust accordingly.
The main engine should be the student's vision for what they would like to be able to play, and then I give them as much help as possible to get to that place. If the student is a child then their parents may have some useful input in this area as well.
