I am a dedicated musician who has been playing the piano since age 3. In my late teens I taught myself to play the guitar and bass guitar, and I have spent my whole life learning the ins and outs of music through theory, composition, and performance. I hold no degrees or certifications other than a degree in environmental science, but I have put more hours into independent musical study than anyone my age who has chosen to pursue a degree in music. The proof is in the putting, as they say. I invite you to take the trial lesson with me and see how you like my style of teaching!
I like to be 100% transparent at all times; I do not have as much teaching experience as other instructors might have. However, I've taught an array of different styles in my time teaching. In the past, many of my students have been experienced players in local bands reaching out because they liked my playing style and wanted a few pointers. Others have been people just wanting to get a better understanding of musical theory and musical site reading & writing. In some cases I've taken on some students just picking up a guitar or keyboard for the first time and have spent whole lessons dedicated to technique and familiarization with the instrument.
I break my expertise into three different categories, which we can pull from and combine based on the situation. They depend largely on the student's age, experience and interests and are as follows:
Music Theory (Piano Only): We explore the mathematics behind music; the elements of scales and modes, how these are used to construct chords and how they relate to one another. Heavily focused on the circle of 5ths/cycle of 4ths. This knowledge will teach you to be able to look at a song's chord chart and learn the song in a style that's uniquely yours. This type of study will also teach you how to write your own music.
Reading Music (Piano Only): We take a look at how to read the musical staff, symbology, fingerings and timing included. You will be able to learn key signatures and how each note translates to the piano. This will prepare you to play any song by reading the sheet music, from beginner songs all the way up to the most complex performance pieces.
Playing! (Guitar and Piano): This is focused on finding the kind of music you love and helping you play it like a pro. If you have some songs you're just dying to learn, or you want to better understand how music comes together and is composed, this type of study is for you. As I mentioned above, my lessons borrow from all three categories to a greater or lesser extent, and always include a little extra through tips and tricks that I've picked up through my time as a musician.
Any seasoned musician knows that you can play all the "right" notes to a piece of music, and it still might not come out sounding as good as you had hoped. I'm here not only to show you how to play these notes right every time, but to teach you how to approach music in a way that allows you to open yourself up to the music and play with your heart as well as your hands.
The main goal of the lessons is to help the student discover that all laws of music pertain to life; every area of music you explore in the practice room can be applied to situations in the real world, and a deeper love of music will lead you to a deeper love of life. We first must decide what area the student is most apt to explore and make a lesson plan accordingly. Every lesson will end with something to work on for the next visit, and songs will generally be the focal point. However, if the student wishes specifically to learn just the mathematics and theory of music, we will tailor the lessons to accommodate.
