Certified Music Teacher k-12th w/13+years classroom experience 20+ years as a professional session musician for live/stage & studio performance
Overview:
Music is my number one love. I began playing guitar in bands when I was 15 and I've been playing ever since. My education consists of an eclectic background of universities and professional real world experiences. I first studied bass for two years with legendary bass professor 'Jim Kalson' at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I then studied for a year at the University of North Texas in Jazz Studies. I finally graduated with a degree from University of Texas Pan American (now 'UTRGV'). Shortly after my graduation I became a fully certified public school music teacher for k thru 12th grade. And throughout my college & teaching years until now I have played with various bands as well as solo projects. Some of the highlights in my career as a professional musician were appearances on Johnny Canales, recording two albums with legendary Grammy award winning producer 'Gary Katz' (Steely Dan, Diana Ross, Christopher Cross, Dire Straits) as well as legendary Hollywood director Robert Rodriguez. I now seek to share and pass on my knowledge and experience to the next generation of musicians. ...and at the very least give my students enough knowledge to enrich their lives and the lives of others through music.
EXPERIENCE
I have 20+ years as a professional musician playing a variety of styles such as rock, jazz, country, hip-hop, funk, r&b, tejano, blues, punk, latin, reggae just to name a few. I have worked with legendary artists and session musicians such as Del Castillo (out of Austin Texas), Malford Milligan (Storyville, Double Trouble), David Grissom (long time guitarist for John Cougar Melloncamp and the Dixie Chicks), Johnny Garcia (guitarist for Garth Brooks), Jeff Plankenhorn (guitarist for Gavin DeGraw, Dixie Chicks), Rick Richards (Drummer for Joe Walsh), and legendary accordionist 'Estaban Jordan' just to name a few. And throughout that time I had also worked as a full time public music teacher k-12th grade. I have a unique mix of both professional and educational experience that I could share with students of all ages.
METHODS USED
The teaching methods I use for young beginners are a combination of Kodaly and Orff (both standard methods of public school music) as well as straight traditional notation and music theory ('tablature' is usually reserved for older, more experienced students). I'm a firm believer in teaching the fundamentals of music, while at the same time, making it fun and engaging for the learner. I also modify according to the student's learning style (i.e. visual, kinesthetic, verbal, etc..). Young beginners will gradually be introduced to more and more challenging repertoire that both suits their interest and skill level. For older or more experienced students I try to find out the students goals and interests are and tailor my instruction accordingly. Students begin to notice that they are progressing AND having fun in the process!
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is a combination of both specific repeating methods and occasional spontaneity. The methods I implement are designed to build on and use what has been learned in previous lessons; so that the end goal is always geared towards mastery of knowledge and skill. There is a lot of repetition involved as far as always referring back to previous lessons. I also implement games from time to time to help a student master a skill they may be having difficulty with; so as to dissuade discouragement and keep the the student engaged and interested. I have also been told that I am a very patient teacher and that I am cognizant of going at the students own pace.
