I’m a multi faceted musician with particular expertise and passion for jazz. I am an HBCU graduate and am proud of it. I recently completed my masters in Jazz Studies at the University of Arkansas at Monticello on full scholarship as a teaching assistant. I consider myself up and coming in the music world and have been blessed to have unique experiences as a performer and leader such as playing at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago or being a section leader in the Marching Wildcats of B-CU. I teach all woodwinds and some brass
I began teaching as a college student. Many of my peers looked up to me and I helped them along their musical path. I further assisted them on their instrument technique, and assisted in learning new styles like jazz music. During my master’s tenure, I was a graduate assistant and taught many students and led ensembles to great student achievement. I also was a middle school band director for a brief period. I have a passion for helping others achieve. My experience has been with students of all ages and levels!
For beginners, they must learn how to play the instrument. So books like standard of excellence or essential elements are great resources. I will guide them through what the book cannot explain and help them truly internalize aspects of playing their instrument. For more advanced players, we will work on tone, advanced technique, new styles as well as history, modern practices and more. Depending on their progress , I will ensure any recital music is music that they want to play, as well as music that really shows their progress on the instrument.
I love to see students succeed. Yet they deserve to be challenged appropriately, they should be proud of their progress and still have fun. So I learn the students style of learning and pace then adjust the approach and music I will have for them. I constantly acknowledge any and all improvements , and welcome mistakes. I truly want the student to think about every decision they make, so they can properly train their subconscious in the right way. By learning the student, this achieves this goal
