Overview:
I'm a brass, piano, and guitar instructor based out of Seattle, Washington who loves working with children and young adults to acheive their musical goals. I graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2009 where I studied with Trombonist Julian Priester, Pianist Dawn Clement and Bassist Chuck Deardorf. In the past 5 years I have had the honor to tour nationally and internationally as a musician with performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Fillmore West (S.F) and Sasquatch Music Festival.
EXPERIENCE
I have been a professional teacher and performer for ten years, touring nationally with funk, soul, and latin bands. The diversity of my experience as a performer has directly impacted my view on teaching. Excitement about practicing music comes directly from passion for music in general, and a key philosophy to my teaching method is to not only instill correct practices and technique, but to attempt to foster a life-long desire for musical exploration in my students. Exposing new musical ideas, exciting modern musicians and cutting edge genres to aspiring performers is essential in maintaining passion and focus for learning any instrument.
METHODS USED
Beginning piano students who are children will begin with the Faber and Faber lesson books which slowly progress the student through techinque and rhythmic exercises built into easy memorable songs. After building a strong base of fundementals I will the begin to introduce and teach songs the student wishes to learn alongside traditional literature to continue the technical progress. Brass lessons of all ages begin with Emory Remmington's Warm Up Studies and initially focus on production of tone, and slide/valve techinque. The Arban's book follows shortly after and sticks with the student throughout their studies. With guitar students I like to teach technique through learning music of the students preference, coupling that with the Fretboard Logic method to enhance understanding of the instrument results in a well rounded approach to the guitar.
LESSON STYLE
My primary goal as an instructor as well as a performer is to create a life long passion for music and personal growth within each of my students, and making sure that each student enjoys and looks forward to their lessons each week is intregal to this goal. Whether an adult, child, beginner, or advanced, realizing the students motivation and personal goals for each lesson is important to tailoring lessons to each persons unique abilities and preferences. Music is fun and I strive to keep it that way!
