2011-2015 University of Montana Odyssey Scholar
I am a passionate, driven, and patient instructor who loves working with students of all ages to achieve excellence. I graduated from University of Montana with a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance. I have performed in a variety of settings including symphonies, operas, jazz ensembles, choirs, and rock bands. My experience has given me the ability to perform and teach any style thrown my way. I believe it is important for all musicians to be versatile and flexible. My passion is preparing students for competition, auditions, and performance.
My teaching experience began in 2015 when I served as the Musical Director for On Center Performing Arts in Missoula, MT. In 2016 I moved to the Seattle area to continue my journey as a teacher. I served as an instructor for Voice in the Valley Music Studio in Maple Valley and as a Music Leader for Musically Minded. The past 2 years I served as Director for Voice in the Valley's Musical Theatre/Disney summer camp. Singing is an incredibly vulnerable act. I work to build confidence, self esteem and trust with each of my students. My students are encouraged to enter competitions, sing at local open mics, participate in solos at school and work on their own compositions.
For all students I use a combination of Alexander Technique, Lovetri Somatic Voice Work, and Kodaly Method. I believe singing is a full body experience and focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind. My lessons are student led. At the first lesson I will ask questions about the students goals and cater the lessons to the individuals needs and desires. It is important for every singer to find their own unique sound through exploration of various genres. Practice is essential to growth, but if a student does not enjoy their repertoire, they simply won't practice. Therefore, I work to find common ground with students when selecting songs. I will not force Classical or Jazz, but feel the technique these styles teach are invaluable. Each student will learn music fundamentals and basic reading skills. I feel knowledge of the piano is helpful for all musicians so in early lessons I will teach piano skills to aid in practice.
The relationship between student and teacher is foundational for growth. I take time to get to know every student as an individual to help them feel supported and comfortable in lessons. I encourage each student to set realistic goals and work at their own pace. We will work on a piece until it is performance ready, meaning it is note perfect, memorized, and blocked. To inspire the students and our lessons I will share music and singers I feel the student will connect with and ask them to share their tastes with me.
When Elin was at Voice in the Valley, she was my teacher since I was 13 and I’m 17 now, she has taught me techniques I didn’t even know you had to use to sing. Elin is very nice and will help you with your voice and improve you breathing and everything else you need help with. I used to sing all the time in my head voice and now I can sing with my chest voice and belt higher notes then I thought I could. This was very long but I highly suggest Elin for your music teacher. :)
After acting in many community plays, I decided I wanted to try my hand at musicals. However, singing in public has always been my biggest fear. Through these circumstances, I found Elin at Voice in the Valley and spent a year with her lessons. She's excellent at encouraging her pupil with constructive criticism. I learned proper breathing technics and built my voice muscles. I was able to learn song from multiple genres and build my audition portfolio with her advice and songs I found. It was awesome be around someone that can tell you specifically how and where to improve in an understandable way. By the end of the year, I had the confidence to audition, my range had expanded, and I was casted in my first musical. Now, people ask me if I've been musically trained cause you can hear it in my voice and I am extremely thankful for my time with Elin. Singing like any instrument takes time and patience, that and the passion is found here.
Lessons with Elin are so great! She focused a lot on my technique and helped me acheive a better use of my diaphragm. She also helped me work on the tension throughout my body and helped me to overall be more conscious of how my body works while singing. She won't force any music style or genre on you. Her main goal is always to find your own unique sound and not to mention the amazing support that she gives to my life outside of voice lessons. Such an amazing teacher and friend!
