Overview:
Experience teaching all levels at all ages, from the beginning child to the aspiring conservatory student, the adult who's always wanted to learn how to play an instrument or the professional looking to brush up on past musical skills. Tailors the lesson to fit the student's needs and temperament; believes two important aspects of teaching are patience and dedication. Equally adept at both violin and viola, plays viola professionally in orchestras throughout the New York area.
EXPERIENCE
My private teaching career began in high school, where I was asked by the music teachers in my school district in Westchester, New York to assist in preparing middle- and elementary school students for local competitions and festivals (such as NYSSMA). During college, I was able to maintain a private studio and was fortunate enough to spend summers assistant teaching at music festivals. Currently I teach in a number of music schools in and around New York City, and serve as Adjunct Instructor of Viola and Violin at New York University to undergraduate students. In addition, I maintain an active private studio of all ages (from pre-K through beginning adults!), and I enjoy problem solving with each individual's perspective and experience in mind. I'm a firm believer that lessons should be tailored to each student's goals - there is absolutely no "one size fits all" method to playing an instrument. In my opinion, being positive and goal-oriented are the most important ingredients for success in music lessons.
METHODS USED
Traditional classical method, Suzuki method. Trained with teachers of various schools including Galamian and Tuttle techniques.
LESSON STYLE
For beginning or young students (under age 8), music-related games are incorporated into lessons to encourage positive growth, rather than thinking of playing an instrument as a "chore". Small assignments are expected to be completed weekly, so that the child feels a sense of accomplishment and progress. For older or more advanced students, lessons are structured by a regimen of scales, exercises, and classical pieces. If the student so chooses, classical pieces can be exchanged for pop or contemporary music. Technique and musicality are two important issues to be addressed at every lesson, and each person's physical build and learning style lends itself to different approaches in these respects. Creating a beautiful sound while being fluent in reading and executing music are the main goals once familiarity is established with the instrument.
