2020 - North Park University School of Music Merit Scholarship
Best in Singing - STAUROS 2017 by Mount Carmel, Bangalore
I am an ardent Voice Instructor whose primary goal is to bring joy to students by helping them excel in their journey to becoming better artists. I believe in progress over perfection. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Psychology, and English from Christ University, India in 2019 and I am currently in the final year of my Master of Music in Vocal Performance Degree from North Park University, Chicago. It has been a privilege serving the community by sharing my music, performing at various events, churches, and schools. I got the opportunity to train under some incredible singers such as Lyric Soprano Amanda Majeski of the Metropolitan Opera and I actively train under Lyric Soprano Annie Picard for my lessons at North Park University.
I have always found myself teaching music in various capacities throughout my life. Whether it as the Music Director of my Church in India or as a College Senior teaching and helping my Juniors musically; Teaching is something I have always considered as a way to improve other musicians/singers and myself! I tend to each of my students' needs according to the goal they have in my lesson with them. I consider myself resourceful to a voice student of any genre for building up good and healthy vocal techniques. I usually suggest repertoire to a student based on their level and/ or Voice type but I am also delighted to help a student with a repertoire of their own choice. At the end of the day, I want my students to enjoy what they sing. I encourage them to put themselves out there to go for competitions or holding their own recitals. More exposure to these gigs would only help a student to grow, not just vocally but also psychologically to deal with Performance Anxiety. Finally, I must say that I get a tremendous amount of boost in teaching voice; I consider it the most rewarding job - being a part of a student's pursuit of their passion simply makes my day!
For my first class with my students, I typically would get to know them in terms of their goals, experience as a singer, and get to know where they are in their pursuit of those goals they set for themselves. After which, I would do warm-up exercises, vowel, and consonant work, and establish fundamentals of vocal techniques for the desired genre. Once the student feels more comfortable with their voice, I would suggest an introductory repertoire (usually an Art Song) according to their age, level, voice type, and their personality. From there, I build on the fundamentals set being sensitive to students' needs and their ability.
My Teaching Style can be summarised in one sentence - "Progress over Perfection." I believe that the journey is just as important and enjoyable as the destination itself and every student has their own journey and their own destination. My goal as a Voice Teacher is to guide and keep them on track in attaining their musical goals and to aid in whatever way possible. A student's satisfaction, the joy of learning, health (not just vocal health but also psychological) holds the highest importance to me as a Teacher. Accordingly, I tailor my instructions for them.
Elisha is an amazing voice instructor! I had the opportunity to learn from him for my Opera reportoir for a recital and he boosted my skills - both technique wise and in terms of confidence! He's fun to work with as he listens to smallest problems the student is facing and solves them in small steps. He also makes the student feel very comfortable throughout the session. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to have a positive experience while learning vocal skills.
