I am a caring, supportive and passionate teacher who really enjoys teaching and sharing my love and knowledge of music with my students. I have been singing and playing piano for 25 years, teaching for 10 years, and performing professionally for 6 years. My students are a very important part of my musical life. I graduated from Indiana University with a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance on a full-tuition scholarship in 2008. I performed several opera roles with the Indiana University Opera Theater, and since graduating, I have performed with opera companies and orchestras nationwide. In 2009, I had my professional solo debut with the Sacramento Philharmonic in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. I am blessed to be the recipient of many prestigious awards, including being named a National Finalist in the American Traditions Singing Competition in 2013.
I have been teaching privately for over ten years. While still an undergraduate at Indiana University, I taught private voice lessons to instrumental students in the School of Music, and I continued teaching while pursuing my Master's degree. After completing my graduate degree in 2008, I started my own private teaching studio and joined the faculty of well accredited music teaching companies. I teach voice, piano and music theory to children, teens, young adults and seniors. I enjoy teaching all genres of music, all levels of proficiency, and all ages! One of the most important things I offer my students is an unconditionally supportive, patient, and nurturing environment. Students learn faster and more effectively when they are comfortable and feel free to make mistakes and ask questions.
I talk with my students (and their parents, if applicable) about their previous musical experience and their expectations and goals in taking lessons. Everyone learns differently and at a different pace, and everyone has unique strengths. I use my students' natural strengths to help them understand the aspects of music that come less naturally to them. Lessons are balanced with technical exercises (scales and arpeggios), music theory (reading music, chord types and progressions,) and learning and performing pieces of music. My students learn songs both by ear and by reading music. I teach all styles of music and incorporate both classical and modern repertoire into the lessons. I work with my students on building musicality in their playing/singing by changing dynamics, phrasing, and musical articulations. We do a series of simple physical stretches to find relaxation in the entire body, head and neck. For my voice students, I emphasize the importance of breathing technique. Breathing should be low in the body and natural. Healthy singing is good singing!
I love seeing a person's eyes light up when they discover something new about music. I find trust to be an important component in the music teacher/student relationship. Learning to sing or play the piano is both fun and hard work. It requires patience, positive thinking, and a commitment to making practicing a priority. Depending on the goals of the student, I help them prepare for music recitals, competitions and auditions. I teach all levels and ages- from kindergarten to adults, beginners to pre-professionals, and I enjoy teaching a beginner as much as I do a seasoned performer. I take the time to get to know my students as individuals, and I cater my teaching style to each individual student. I am a caring, knowledgeable and patient teacher, inspired by my own teachers who encouraged me through the past 25 years.
