I'm an opera singer with several years of teaching experience and I want to help you reach your musical goals! I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Texas State University and a Master of Music degree in Classical Vocal Performance from the University of Miami. I have extensive experience singing both choral music and opera. I recently moved to New York from Phoenix, Arizona, where I maintained a thriving studio of about twenty-five private piano and voice students, ranging in age from 5 to 92. In addition to teaching in-home lessons, I'm planning to have my own teaching studio space within the next six months.
My teaching experience began in my undergraduate degree, where I learned about teaching methods particular to music education. While these methods were geared towards general music class in school group settings, this information heavily the way I communicate musical concepts to young students. I began teaching privately during my Masters degree, while I was taking vocal pedagogy classes and learning in-depth about the vocal mechanism. My favorite part of teaching is sharing my love of music with my students and watching them take ownership of the music they make. In the past, my students have participated in our studio recitals, earned leading roles in school and community musicals, and have grown in self-confidence.
Piano: For young beginners, I usually recommend the Alfred or Faber piano method books. These books provide a solid foundation for technique and music theory. For adult beginners, I recommend the Alfred All-in-One piano method. I'm also open to continue any piano method that the student has previously worked on and is comfortable with.
Voice: I will assist the student in selecting songs suitable to their age and ability level. I have a library of music books, but I also encourage my students to provide any specific music they would be interested in learning.
I love teaching and watching my students grow and learn. I like to maintain a good balance of generous encouragement, unlimited patience, and high expectations. My goal is for my students to become lifelong musicians, music lovers, and learners. My students learn specific strategies for practicing so they can continue to make progress between lessons. Each student is different and requires an individual approach to teaching. I want my students to feel valued, heard, supported, and encouraged during their lessons with me.
