My Mission is to share the love of music and learning by providing high-quality private instruction built on a strong relationship with my students. I am proud to offer my expertise as a performer, educator, and musician to you or your student. I am certified to teach and have experience teaching in a professional setting in the following areas: music, reading, and math I have performed internationally (multiple locations in France and Italy) as well as regionally (in New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas), and nationally ( in New York City ) as a vocalist in roles such as Le Feu, Le Rossignol, Hansel, and many others. I have been a paid soloist for major works such as Handel's Messiah. I have a BA in vocal performance and a MA in Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Conducting. I have played classical guitar for 12 years and studied under the acclaimed guitarist and author Ambrose Rivera. I have been playing piano for 20 years. I was a member of the piano studio under the Manhattan School of Music Graduate, Dr. John Olsen for 4 years. I have won several awards as a vocalist and studied under Dr. Jason Vest and Dr. Jean Ornella's, a finalist in The Metropolitan Opera Competition.
I have studied music since childhood and continued with two professional degrees in music. My first degree is in Vocal Performance my second is in Music Education. I have been a part of a collegiate piano studio throughout my undergraduate degree. I have been playing classical guitar since childhood, but didn't study it in a collegiate setting. I began studio teaching in college, around 2014. I have continued teaching privately. I have also taught in public and private schools. I have taught general music, mariachi, guitar, choir, and piano in a school setting. I have experience teaching ages 3-60. I love teaching students of all ages! I especially enjoy working with adult beginners or advanced beginners but enjoy teaching everyone!
Depending on the level of the student and instrument, I incorporate a mixture of theory, aural skills, technique, and repertoire. All of my piano students play Hannon exercises to build up their finger strength and dexterity as well as scales. Vocal students and guitar students likewise learn scales and exercises for the sake of technique. All students start each lesson by practicing reading rhythms at varying complexities, then creating their rhythmic patterns. Depending on the level of the student, the created rhythm is used as a guideline for basic improvisation on thier instrument. During scale work and technique, I include notes in the students journal relevant to theory, such as key signatures, patterns, and vocabulary. We then transition to the student's repertiore, which varies on the student's level and personal interests.
I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I use positive reinforcement and keep things fun for all ages. In each lesson, I work on aural skills and theory through fun warm-up games that get gradually more challenging as time continues. I then allow students to guide repertoire choice. I offer suggestions and make every effort to pander to my student's individual musical goals and interests. I hold high expectations during lessons but do so through encouragement and positive reinforcement.
