Studied Theatre at Ball State University 15+ years private study in Music Theory, Double Reeds and Piano
Overview:
I have always had an eclectic love for all things music, and enthusiastically share it with anyone who will have me! There was a piano in my house growing up and I couldn't stay away. In school, I studied oboe and bassoon. Eventually I just explored any instrument that caught my interest- guitar, trumpet, ocarinas, panflutes, etc. I spent a lot of time doing musical theatre, and studied voice for a time as well. Performing was fun, but I found that teaching others is by far the most rewarding. Playing music is the most relaxing, invigorating, inspiring, and stress-relieving activity I have ever known, and I believe everyone should have that in their life. My sheet music library boasts classical music, blues, jazz, ragtime, broadway showtunes, pop, rock, TV, movie, video game soundtracks, and more!
EXPERIENCE
I come from a family of teachers, and I started sharing my love of music with family and friends at a very early age. I was section leader in high school and assistant concert master at a local church orchestra. During and after college, I worked with a company that provided group piano lessons at Detroit Public Schools. A nearby high school band recruited me to tutor their double reeds section. Then I succeeded my old private instructor at A&R Music as their primary oboe and basson teacher. I regularly play piano accompaniment for musical theatre singers and have taught piano lessons out of my home studio for 3 years. My students have lots of fun learning and exploring music with me, and several have gone on to produce their own music.
METHODS USED
I believe everyone has a song in their heart, and I take it upon myself to give them the tools to make it come to life. Every student needs to learn the basic fundamentals of music theory, ear training, rhythm and dexterity. However, experience has shown me how differently people learn, so I zone in on what works best for the student and customize lessons towards their own goals and strengths. I will teach out of various lesson books as needed and introduce concepts and excercises while immediately getting the student playing songs of interest.
LESSON STYLE
I'm very friendly and patient. Learning music should be enjoyable, and never a burden. My students learn at their own pace and have fun doing it. I'm happy to work with youngters, providing they have a basic grasp of letters and numbers. Older beginners are some of my favorites, those who may have always wanted to learn and never had time before. It's never too early or late to bring music into your life, as it helps with concentration, dexterity, and relaxation!
