I'm a passionate, hardworking instructor with over 10 years of teaching experience. I love to help students reach their full potential as performers, whether in singing, guitar/piano, or even songwriting! I'm also a professional singer/songwriter and I just finished a 365-day tour performing at venues around the country. I absolutely love to help my students get more comfortable with their singing voices, have fun, and do what they love. I believe singing can be one of the most healing experiences for people, and I love to inspire my students to come out of their shell and find their voice.
My teaching experience dates back to high school, when I was a surfing instructor in Huntington Beach, California. I love helping people achieve their goals. I starting teaching music after graduating from college in 2010, when I trained to become a professional Vocal Coach at Songbird Studios in San Francisco. I fell in love with teaching vocal technique, performance skills, and songwriting to a wide age range of students--as young as 6 and as old at 75! I love to have fun with my students and really discover what they're most passionate about. I believe every student should be able to sing and play whatever style they love most--if my students aren't enjoying themselves, then I'm not doing my job!
For all my students, I first ask the question: why are you taking vocal lessons? I want to know first and foremost my students' goals and what they like/don't like about their singing voice. Then I start with the basics: what is happening in your body when you sing, and why? First I like to start with singing easy 5-tone scales to discover the students' voice type, then I talk to my students about what makes their voice special. From easy 5-tone scales I'll teach them about techniques like vocal attack, breath control, and projecting. We usually spend half the lesson on scales and theory, and the other half on a song of the students' choosing.
Nothing is more important to me than my students' personal goals and having a discussion on how we can achieve those goals. I always want to make sure my students are moving forward in their creative process, so I like to check in with them at each lesson to discuss their progress. It's definitely important to me that my students practice on their own (especially if we're having lessons once/week.) I like to have my students record themselves (using the voice memo feature on their phone or, if possible, another recording device) so they can listen back to their lessons and practice between lessons. I love to push my students out of their comfort zones, but in a healthy and positive way. It's important to me that my students feel inspired and that they're doing something they love, rather than something they feel forced to do. I love to tailor my lessons to each student, depending on what inspires them!
Ellisa was my vocal coach last year. I was intimidated as first since I had never had professional lessons. She made me feel comfortable right away. She had all of the qualities that was looking for in a coach. She encouraged me with positive messages. She explained things in a variety of ways so that I could clearly understand her instructions. She had a positive attitude which I really appreciated. I exceeded my goals working with Ellisa. I wanted to voice train but I found myself inspired to write songs as well. She gave me great suggestions on how to put my thoughts into words. I successfully wrote my first song. I have made one of my passions come true thanks to the thoughtful direction from Ellisa. I highly recommend her!!! I will forever be grateful for my musical mentor. It was an honor to train with her. Anne G.
