I am a musician, composer and educator from Chicago, Illinois, currently based in Boston, Massachusetts. My music combines the intricate elements of musical performance with his passion for music cognition to create a unique experience as a performer and an educator. I was awarded Outstanding Trumpet Soloist by Wynton Marsalis in the inaugural Jazz Rudin Jazz Championship and selected as a member of the prestigious 2019 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program. He placed third in the 2019 National Trumpet Competition Jazz Division and placed as a semifinalist in the small classical ensemble division. I performed at venues and festivals including Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, BBC Radio Foyle, Ulster Hall, Panama Jazz Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, and the San Jose Jazz Festival. As of December 2021, I am a graduate of the Master of Music program at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute on a full tuition scholarship under the direction of maestro Danilo Perez.
I have been teaching a total of 5 years. I currently have a studio of students online now and I am looking to expand my experience teaching. I was excited to complete my graduate thesis in December 2021, Music for Creative Learning. It proposes a specific teaching pedagogy that is meant to stimulate cognitive development, foster creativity, and develop global civics. More importantly it uses music as an interconnective force for creative learning and cultural immersion in education. Together, we will have fun mastering the instrument as well as observing how music can affect all parts of our life.
Each student is a different starting point depending on playing ability and age among a multitude of other factors. I am willing to negotiate to give any help the student needs at any level. However, for beginners we will always start learning by ear, as well as singing and clapping (sound before symbol). For more advanced students, we would include that in some way but I am more catering to each individual need. I can help with something if its sightreading, songwriting, improvising, technique, or anything else you would like to learn.
My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing. A lot of my students so far really appreciate that balance and the break between playing their instruments. Even if you just have a handful of questions you would like to ask me, I am ok with that too! Whatever I can do to best help you.
