Overview:
I have loved singing since I could first talk! I grew up singing in choirs, shows, and church. When I attended the Governor's School for the Arts in Norfolk, VA for high school, I realized that music and singing would be my career path for life. There, I was classically trained and learned to sing opera. I went on to complete my Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in voice. I am excited to have moved to Chicago with my husband, Sean. I look forward to the opportunities here!
EXPERIENCE
While receiving my master’s degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Kentucky I became a teacher at a youth arts academy, Academy for Creative Excellence. I never envisioned myself as a voice teacher, but as I grew to know my students and see the impact of the arts on their young lives it has become a true passion of mine. Since discovering my love for teaching voice, I myself have sung more musical theatre as it is the most popular genre I teach. I have directed a high school musical, Aida, and absolutely loved that experience! I have had a voice studio of up to 20 students aged 6-25 years and have taught multiple group voice classes. I love teaching private voice because of the individual attention each child receives and deserves, and because of the relationships formed with students and families!
METHODS USED
Each of my students learns to read music, practices sight singing, and learns solfege. In my opinion, these are the neccessary fundamentals to being a great singer AND musician! Each student also does warm ups including breathing exercises, vocal technique exercises, and vocalises. Picking repertoire is always a lot of fun, and the choice of song is a shared decision between teacher and student! I try to tailor the lesson and approach to each individual student.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is fun, focused, and efficient. I like to keep the environment positive and encouraging, as that is what helps a student progress the most! When a student first starts lessons, we establish a few goals to accomplish over the semester, such as "become more confident" or, "learn a foreign language piece". With these in mind, I will teach the lessons, pick warm ups, and select repertoire (with the student) accordingly! I also encourage my students to practice, practice, practice!
