Music is my life! I was raised in a family band and have been performing my entire life. I went to a little high school in a little town in Idaho and I am in my last semester of my bachelors degree for Music at Northwest Nazarene University. I have performed all over the northwest and have been on countless tours with the college groups. I am a very outgoing person and I try to be happy everyday. I love trumpet and I want to be sure that everyone gets the opportunity to have trumpet lessons regardless of location.
I have been teaching since high school when I was the only trumpet in our high school band and the younger middle school families wanted to get their child lessons but didn't have the money or be able to get them to a music school to help them, so I would teach them after school. Through my college life I have continued to teach those kids and more and even had one of my kids go off to state jazz. I want to make sure that through my teaching I keep the student in love with music, if they have a hard week of playing, don't give up and keep going. I love to keep them motivated and make sure that they are playing something that they love so they can keep the passion going.
For the students who are just starting out, I have the Essential Elements books to help the student learn notes, read music, and with that book it helps because most of the songs you know, Mary Had a Little Lamb for example. As the student grows I move them to something that they would enjoy such as pop music or even movie music, then from there moving the student onto the solo repertoire for recitals in any genre that they want, Jazz, Classical, or other. With adults wanting to learn I would make sure that what ever they move onto they stay interested and invested no matter their ability level!
I try to teach the same way that I live my life, fun and happy. I want to make sure that the student grows in ability and passion for their instrument while progressing at their own pace and making sure that they grow and have realistic goals for where they are at that time of the lesson. I love to get to know the student and make sure that they are acknowledged for all the good work that they get through making sure that they have drive for their learning and keep wanting to learn to better themselves and be the best player that they can possibly be.
