Hi! My name is Emily Maka and I am a music teacher originally from California and now currently living in Texas. I graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and the following year earned my teaching credential in music. I also recently completed my Masters of Music Education, earning my degree from Kent State University in Ohio. I am passionate about music education and believe everyone deserves to opportunity to learn music through performance on an instrument.
I stated playing the Flute and Violin when I was 9 years old and have been involved in music ever since. I went on to participate in any music class I could take during high school including Concert band, Jazz band, Marching band, Drum-line, and Orchestra. I decided to use pursue a degree in music education to help future students develop their talent for music. I have taught private lessons for over 12 years and use my experience as a elementary and middle school music teacher (10 years) to teach band and orchestra instruments. I am constantly pursuing new knowledge and methods to apply to my teaching as a way to connect with and motivate my students.
Every student has different interests and a different learning style. I customize every lesson and lesson plan to meet the needs of my students. The first lesson is focused on my assessment of a students skills, interests, and learning styles. From there I will determine the most useful resources for each student. I will work with the method book that is being used in a student's school, in addition to method books designed for individual skill development such as the Rubank Method Books or Suzuki Method for string instruments. I utilize solo repertoire that can be used for competitions and auditions, as well as pieces that a student is interested in learning that will better teach or reinforce instrumental skill development.
I am an advocate for students to be involved in their own learning. It is important for me to help each student set goals and create lesson plans that set the students up for success in achieving those goals. I am patient with my students and always try to meet them where they are at. I want my students to succeed in what they are working on, but also to feel accomplished and proud of themselves when they reach their goals. I carefully review the goals set my me and my students and break them down into manageable steps, acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments along the way. I am constantly evaluating what is helpful to each student and using this information to guide my instruction for future lessons. My overall goal is to help a student learn music using an instrument and to help them discover their passion for music so they can become lifelong learners who truly enjoy participating in music.
