BA in Music, minor in Education Studies - Saint Joseph's College of Indiana 2015 ... M in Organizational Leadership - Southwestern Assemblies of God University 2019
Overview:
I graduated with a BA in music from Saint Joseph's College. I studied both choral and instrumental education. I did not work towards becoming a teacher because I want to work in more non-traditional education settings (sacred music, worship teams, private lessons). I'm working on my masters in organizational leadership because I'm hoping to work with church musicians on weekends and have a management style job during the week. I hope to always be able to teach private lessons because I love working with people one on one and in small group settings.
EXPERIENCE
I have experience teaching in schools from when I was in college. I taught classes of choral students and worked with small groups and single students in band classes. I worked with a private studio in Chesterton, IN for about 6 months while I was still in college. I recently worked with the local YMCA in Rockford as a private music instructor. I was there for 1 year and 7 months and taught piano and voice lessons. When I was in college, my primary instruments were voice and tuba, and my secondary instrument was piano. I have experience teaching children age 3 and up and with adults as well.
METHODS USED
Piano: For children who aren't familiar with music or reading yet, I use the Wunderkeys curriculum. It teaches simple things about the piano and about music that are easy to learn for kids 3-5 and has a lot of games to reinforce information and keep lessons fun. For older beginners, I use both Faber Piano Adventures and Bastien Piano Basics. Both accomplish the same goal, but some students prefer the more professional look of the Faber series as opposed to all the cartoons in the Bastien Series. Scales and other technical skills are big part of lessons with me for more advanced students or for my younger students who want to be challenged and learn more. ... Voice: I use the Sing at First Sight series to teach my vocal students how to read music. It teaches using solfege (do, re, mi...) syllables along with music to assist singers in learning different intervals in music. Breathing exercises are used frequently in lessons with me to assure that my students are singing correctly and not harming their vocal chords. I am happy to help my students with music they are working on in school or extra curricular activities if they would like. ... Low Brass: I use the Hal Leonard Essential Elements series along with external repertoire such as Arban's in low brass lessons. I will often have my students sing their music or buzz their music on their mouthpiece. Scales and other technical skills are big part of lessons with me. I am happy to help my students with music they are working on in school or extra curricular activities if they would like.
LESSON STYLE
It's important to make sure that my students are both enjoying their lessons and learning. I use short games and activities to keep my younger students excited about lessons and so they don't get overloaded during lessons with a ton of information. I enjoy teaching my students how to set and adjust goals for themselves so they know what they're working towards. I try to keep what I do relevant to what my students want to learn; I won't force anyone to play music that won't help them reach their goal. I believe in life-long learning, so you'll see my teaching style change a little overtime.
