My name is Emily, and I offer piano lessons for children in my Chula Vista home, or by arrangement in your San Diego area home. I am a substitute teacher who works at the preschool, kindergarten, and elementary schools in Coronado, Silver Strand, and Chula Vista. I have an extensive background in music, singing, and piano; my family is filled with musicians, and after growing up playing piano and performing in musicals and with college choirs, I have happily settled into a career of sharing my love of music with children.
As a navy wife and mother of two children, I have spent many years moving to places across the country and across two oceans. I found substitute teaching to be enormously fulfilling during this time of constant change; I discovered how much I enjoy working with children and helping them discover the joy of learning! Since finally settling down in San Diego, I have been focusing on sharing my love for music by teaching piano, after years of nurturing my own daughter's talent for violin and singing.
I begin students with the Faber Piano Adventures books, which get students' fingers on the keys at the very first lesson, and also focus on theory. Once they are beginning to read music, usually after a few months, I introduce popular songs to supplement the lesson book, such as the theme to Star Wars, or Disney music, which the children recognize, and add extra fun to their practice time. I am happy to find specific songs that a student may request! I strongly encourage students to sit down at the piano every day to practice, even if only for five or ten minutes; daily practice leads to quick progress. I supply little books to students where I write down what they should practice every day, and where they record the days that they practice by coloring in a music note for each day.
I provide a warm and positive learning environment for students. I believe students learn best when they are unafraid to make mistakes or try new things, and are rewarded for their efforts. After the first few lessons, I ask students if they would like to participate in my reward system for practicing: I give them a small jar and marbles, and every day they practice, they put a marble in the jar. When the jar is filled, they choose a prize from my prize box. I understand the different learning styles of individual students, and so I adapt my lessons as necessary. Most importantly, I convey an attitude of joy.
