Bachelor of Music, Drake University, Cello Performance, 2017 Master of Music, University of Iowa, Cello Performance, 2019
Overview:
I am a patient instructor who teaches using a mix of music theory, lesson books, and other songs the student wants to play. My goal is for every student to find their love of music and want to keep progressing. While I love performing, I've found teaching to be one of my passions. The moment when a difficult concept clicks in a student's head is just as rewarding as performing on stage. I have a Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance from Drake University and am currently working on my Master's degree.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching and maintaining a studio for 3 1/2 years. My teaching style revolves around the student. I always try my best to explain new concepts and ideas in a way that makes most sense for the student, since that's how I was always taught. A regular practice schedule is the most important part of taking lessons, and I work with students to make sure they know how they should be practicing during the week in order to be effective. I understand that not all of my students aspire to be professional musicians, but my main goal is to make music lessons enjoyable!
METHODS USED
For beginner/intermediate students I use the Essential Elements method plus Suzuki when they reach a higher level of playing. My advanced students can expect to play etudes from the Schroeder book as well as Popper when they get to that level. I am open to teaching repertoire that the student is interested in, as long as the level isn't too far beyond their reach. For adults, we mostly stick to Suzuki and Essential Elements, but I have found that incorporating songs they are familiar with is helpful in their education.
LESSON STYLE
It's my goal to have every student progress throughout the year. Every student learns at different rates, so I teach based on that. I will explain concepts using different techniques until it clicks for a student. Asking questions is also a huge part of the way I teach. Not only does it help solidify concepts, but allows the student to tell me what they know and what they have learned so far. I also make sure to find songs the student likes to play. When a student enjoys the music they're working on, it tends to make practicing easier. By using a mix of my picks and a student's choice of repertoire, we can keep progressing.
