Master Degree: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Bachelor Degree: Western Connecticut State University
I am an intrepid, versatile mezzo-soprano whose life and vocal work go hand in hand. First and foremost a singer, I have dedicated myself to experimenting and refining my own voice and vocal potential. Born and raised in Connecticut, I began singing formally at the age of thirteen and followed that passion to my Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Western Connecticut State University, where I focused on classical art song and operatic aria. From 2013 - 2021, I lived in the Czech Republic, developing personal and collaborative projects outside of classical music such as singing and composing for Yo Soy Indigo (freak-folk-jazz), Looncall (dark electronic), as well as solo performances of original music. I have a deep appreciation for all genres and love to flow through them in my vocal performance and composition styles. I have recently graduated with my Master of Arts from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow under the tutelage of Kathleen Ferguson and Lorna Anderson. I live in Glasgow with my husband, Alex and our cat, Frida.
I have been teaching for 5 years, ever since of friend of mine asked for some lessons to help him get back to singing. I loved the direct connection to this very personal aspect of peoples' lives, and I felt humbled by the trust I was given. I gained experience by doing, asking questions, and really listening to the needs of my students. I listen a lot, and do my best to find creative, sustainable solutions to issues that could come up in the voice while also being as encouraging and realistic as possible.
My teaching style is based around health-promoting vocal exercises and exploration which serve to build the voice in all areas. Increased strength and flexibility in the voice work for us in any style and ultimately give us the freedom to express ourselves with greater ease. I strive for wellness in the voice and does not push people to sing in ways that create pain or stress. I am patient in working through any particular issues such as intonation, ear training, releasing tension, and breathing. I love to incorporate songs or parts of songs that build the skills we are working on.
I am a very organised teacher, giving each of my students lesson notes with exercises and aspects to work on. I regularly suggest music which complements the work we are doing to strengthen the voice, create flexibility, or consistency of tone. I am a bit of a perfectionist, but I also hold myself to that high standard. It is so important to me to get students to listen to themselves, to think critically about what they hear and feel, and also learn how to troubleshoot issues on their own! I love what I do, and I love to laugh a lot with my students also.
