Overview:
I am a music instructor who has a great passion for music and teaching. I have been playing the piano and singing for 23 years and am eager to share my knowledge and experiences with my students. In 2010, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UCSD. I continued to study music independently in and after college, and in 2015I completed Certificate of Merit, Level 10 (Advanced), the final level, for piano, which includes a comprehensive music evaluation and written theory test. I am now a member of MTAC and can enter students in the Certificate of Merit Program.I have been writing music since age 7, and in 2013, I released my first solo piano CD on iTunes of my original compositions.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching various activities for 10 years. I began in high school teaching figure skating to children and adults in group and private lessons. In college I taught gymnastics and dance and began teaching my first piano student. After graduating, I continued teaching in these areas, and I also began tutoring English. Now I am concentrating on music and am looking forward to sharing my passion for music with new students of all ages.
METHODS USED
For children and adults, I believe it is important to assess the student and have an understanding of what the students' goals are before diving into learning new concepts. I encourage learning by using positive reinforcement, approaching the subject from multiple angles, engaging in learning games, and other methods. It is important for all students to learn music theory, as it provides a solid understanding of the fundamentals, which will enable students to become the best musicians that they can be.
LESSON STYLE
It is important to meet each student where he or she is at rather than trying to force a one-size-fits-all approach on every student. Each student has individual needs, and I do my best to tailor lessons to those needs. My hope is that each student not only learns how to play, sing, and read music, but also develop an appreciation for music and the ability to see how music can truly enrich one's life.
