Overview:
I’m a recent college graduate with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. I started taking piano lessons when I was eight years old, and continued lessons through high school and for a few semesters in college. I started singing in choir when I was 10 years old, and have been in one or more choirs ever since! I started taking private voice lessons in high school and decided to choose voice as my college major. I’m just getting started as a voice and piano instructor but have enjoyed the lessons I have taught. I’m looking forward to helping others develop their musical talent.
EXPERIENCE
My biggest focus with my students is building confidence! I strive to always be encouraging. I believe that we are capable of accomplishing much more when we believe that we can do it! One of the most important building blocks of confidence is consistent practice. I will make sure my students leave their lessons with a plan for the coming week’s practice. I will do my best to make sure this practice is both purposeful and enjoyable. Their assignments will include pieces that help improve their musical technique as well as pieces that appeal to their personal musical style.
METHODS USED
For piano students just starting out, I like Alfred’s basic piano library, and the Bastien piano basics. There are several other piano courses I’m excited to try as well. For both piano and voice students, I like to include a book of tunes with which the student is familiar: movie tunes, Disney songs, etc. For older students, I will focus a little more on the different time periods of music and help them to gain an appreciation for each. In addition to broadening their experience with different types of music, I will place a special emphasis on the type of music that they enjoy most or feel will be of the most use to them in accomplishing their goals.
LESSON STYLE
I want to give all my students a background in classical music to prepare them for possible further education in music and give them confidence among classically-trained musicians. I also want my curriculum to include non-classical musical styles that each particular student enjoys and relates to. I want to help students accomplish their personal goals (and their parents’ goals) regarding their musical education. Most importantly, I want my students to love playing and/or singing music! Whatever styles they choose as their favorites or their performance styles, I want them to have an appreciation of the broad spectrum of music and its essential role in the world.
